Ownership and History of NAB
NAB’s history begins with the National Bank of Australasia, which opened for business in Melbourne in 1858. Meanwhile, the other half of the modern bank, the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney, began in 1834.
The two banks then merged on 1 October 1981 to form what became National Australia Bank Limited. NAB’s head office is in Melbourne, its shares trade on the ASX under the code NAB, and it describes itself as Australia’s largest business bank alongside its personal banking, wealth and institutional operations.
NAB also owns ubank, its digital bank, which launched in 2008 and operates under NAB’s banking licence. In 2021 NAB acquired the neobank 86 400, and then in 2022 it brought the two together under the ubank brand. You can read more on our ubank profile.
Where NAB Home Loans May Suit
Overall, based on what NAB publishes and what independent sources confirm, NAB home loans may suit:
- Self-employed borrowers. NAB publishes a self-employed home loan policy and, according to industry press, moved in 2025 to accepting one year of tax returns for eligible self-employed applicants in some circumstances, subject to lender criteria. Our self-employed home loans page explains what lenders typically look for.
- Borrowers who want a major bank with a national branch network as well as phone and online support.
- Owner-occupiers and investors looking for mainstream variable and fixed rate lending, including interest-only options for investment loans in some circumstances.
- Clients who prefer to apply through a broker. NAB has a dedicated broker channel as well as an accreditation program for mortgage brokers.
Home Loan Types NAB Offers
NAB’s own website and independent industry sources confirm the following home loan types. Product names and features change, so ask us for the current range.
- Owner-occupied home loans, with variable and fixed rate options
- Investment property loans, with principal and interest or interest-only repayments in some circumstances
- Home loans for self-employed borrowers
- Conditional approval (pre-approval) before you buy
