Ownership and History of AMP Bank
AMP began in 1849 as the Australian Mutual Provident Society, a mutual life insurer. It stayed a mutual for almost 150 years, then demutualised and listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1998. AMP Bank opened for business in that same year, broadening the group beyond insurance and wealth management.
Today AMP Limited provides banking, superannuation and retirement products in Australia and New Zealand. AMP Bank Limited is the group’s ADI and offers home loans, savings accounts and term deposits. It appears on the APRA register of authorised deposit-taking institutions as an Australian-owned bank.
AMP Bank also works closely with mortgage brokers. For example, in July 2024 it simplified the way it assesses self-employed, rental and bonus income for broker-introduced customers (Broker Daily reported the changes).
Where AMP Bank Home Loans May Suit
Based on publicly available information, AMP Bank home loans may be worth comparing for:
- Self-employed borrowers with an established business. Since 1 July 2024, AMP Bank has said it can assess self-employed applicants using an ABN registered for at least two years, the most recent one-year tax return and a notice of assessment, subject to servicing and lender criteria (AMP Bank, Broker Daily and Australian Broker all describe the policy). - Investors. For instance, AMP Bank offers investment property loans with principal and interest or interest-only repayments up to 10 years.
- Borrowers who want an offset account. In particular, some AMP Bank variable loans come with a 100% offset account, depending on the product.
- Borrowers who like a choice of fixed, variable or split loans within one lender.
