Ownership and History of St.George

St.George began in 1937 as a co-operative building society serving the Hurstville community in southern Sydney. Over the following decades it grew into one of the largest building societies in New South Wales, with its base in Kogarah.

St.George later obtained a banking licence in 1992 and became St.George Bank. In 2008 it merged with Westpac. The merger took effect on 1 December 2008, and St.George then became part of Westpac Group.

Today St.George is a division of Westpac Banking Corporation and operates under Westpac’s banking authority and credit licence, rather than holding its own. In 2011 Westpac rebadged St.George’s Victorian branches as Bank of Melbourne, so the St.George brand is now most visible in New South Wales and other states.

You can read more about the parent on our Westpac profile.

Where St.George Home Loans May Suit

Overall, based on what St.George publishes and what independent sources confirm, St.George home loans may suit:

  • First home buyers. For example, St.George’s Family Pledge lets an eligible family member use equity in their home to guarantee part of the loan, which can reduce or avoid LMI in some circumstances. St.George also participates in government first home buyer schemes. See our first home loans page.
  • Self-employed borrowers. St.George offers self-employed applicants the same home loans as salary earners, with assessment options that may reduce the paperwork for eligible applicants, subject to lender criteria. See self-employed home loans.
  • People building or renovating. St.George’s building loan option releases funds in stages once construction reaches each milestone, and you can use it with a contract builder or as an owner-builder. See construction loans.
  • Owner-occupiers and investors who want a major bank group’s products with a separate brand and branch network, concentrated in New South Wales.
  • Clients who prefer to apply through a broker. You can arrange a St.George home loan through a mortgage broker as well as online, by phone or in a branch.
