Ownership and History of La Trobe Financial

Since its establishment in 1952, La Trobe Financial has grown over seven decades into one of Australia’s larger non-bank lenders and credit asset managers. It lends against residential and commercial property and also manages investment funds on behalf of retail and institutional investors.

In March 2022 Brookfield, a global alternative asset manager, agreed to acquire La Trobe Financial, and the transaction completed in May 2022. Brookfield has been the majority owner since then.

Later, in April 2026, Axight, an Abu Dhabi-based private equity manager, agreed to acquire a minority stake from Brookfield. However, Brookfield will remain the majority shareholder, with completion of the transaction expected in the second half of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

La Trobe Financial’s head office is in Collins Street, Melbourne, and it also has a further office in Sydney. As a non-bank lender, it does not operate as an authorised deposit-taking institution, so it does not take deposits.
