Ownership and History of ANZ
ANZ traces its origins to the Bank of Australasia, established in London by royal charter in 1835, which opened its first Australian branch in Sydney that year. Later, in 1951, the Bank of Australasia merged with the Union Bank of Australia to form the Australia and New Zealand Bank.
Then, in 1970, that bank merged with the English, Scottish and Australian Bank to create Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited, at the time the largest merger in Australian banking history. The group has its head office in Melbourne and also serves customers across Australia, New Zealand and a number of Asian and Pacific markets.
In January 2023 ANZ completed a restructure that made ANZ Group Holdings Limited the new listed parent of the group, with the banking business held separately from its non-banking businesses. As a result, ANZ Group Holdings shares trade on the ASX under the code ANZ.
On 31 July 2024 ANZ completed its acquisition of Suncorp Bank from Suncorp Group. Suncorp Bank continues to operate under its own brand for the time being while ANZ moves its customers across over time. You can read more on our Suncorp Bank profile.
Where ANZ Home Loans May Suit
Overall, based on what ANZ publishes and what independent sources confirm, ANZ home loans may suit:
- Self-employed borrowers and business owners. In particular, ANZ publishes a dedicated policy for business owners, with streamlined income verification for eligible applicants. Industry press reports that ANZ may accept one year of financials in some circumstances, subject to eligibility and lender criteria. See our self-employed home loans page for how a broker approaches this.
- Borrowers who want a major bank with a national branch network as well as phone and online service.
- Owner-occupiers and property investors looking for mainstream variable and fixed rate lending, including investment loans.
- Clients who prefer to apply through a broker. For example, ANZ has a dedicated residential broker channel with broker managers and an online portal for accredited brokers.
